Tapping into the rawness of navigating the quirks and quarrels of mental health, Slung's debut track is blisteringly vulnerable and heavy as hell.
Released via Fat Dracula, 'Neurotic' dives deep into the fear of losing control of the world around you and centres around frontwoman Katie Oldham’s experience with 'Pure O' OCD. "It's a baffling and sometimes terrifying thing, far more common than I realised', says Katie. "This track is a series of small revelations that represent my phobia of disempowerment and relinquishing control."
Katie's devastatingly personal and confessional songwriting has delicate beginnings that crescendo into a frenzy of crashing riffs and pounding drums; mirroring the emotional turbulence of coming to understand ourselves in all of our weird and wonderful neural complexity. This is underscored in the sublime closing line: "But this is what we're working with / A hell of an alternative."
Amusingly self-dubbed as a "tight-knit crew of the formerly gifted and talented", Slung are made up of former members of Brighton groups Sit Down, The Death of Us, and Intechnicolour. Slung are flung all over the continent, but the seaside city has remained their spiritual home. With the ambition of finally finishing years-old demos, Slung are here to bring 90s slacker rock nostalgia to the front.
This autumn, Slung will be hitting the road on a UK tour, with a few sunny Spanish dates thrown in. Get your tickets here for a taste of grunge-fueled catharsis.
