Symphonic indie ensemble SoftTop pull at heartstrings and induce dewy-eyes on their newest cut, 'Broken Glass'.
Led by the tender, soulful vocals of Miles Goodall, the seven-piece band crafts an evocative soundscape to pierce even the hardest of hearts. Their previous single, 'Runaway', showcased their maximalist approach to artful balladry, with grandiose string arrangements, jazz-tinged flourishes and layered vocal harmonies. Much like a warm Grizzly Bear-esque hug.
'Broken Glass' dials down the jazz and expands into orchestral storytelling of love and loss. The track swells with palpable emotion, driven by rich vocals, delicate piano and soaring cello lines that intertwine with raw lyrical vulnerability. The confessional track captures the universal, painful experience of coming to terms with unrequited affections.
SoftTop's intricate instrumental arrangements reflect the band's talented composition. The lineup - guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, synth, clarinet, sax, cello, and flute - creates a lush and expansive sound that dances between intimacy and grandeur. Despite their ambitious sonic landscape, the group maintains a humble, self-effacing charm, dubbing their lovely music "Soft Music for Soft People."
Listeners liable to the sensuous sounds of Matt Maltese, Andy Shauf, and 'Lover, You Should’ve Come Over' Jeff Buckley will find much to love in SoftTop's earnest lyricism.
'Broken Glass' is out on Monday 30 September 2024 via Brighton-based Crafting Room Recordings (ELLiS·D, Ideal Living).
